The Earth Stopper

An incredibly well painted, period oil on canvas interpreting the famous painting titled “ The Earth Stopper” by George Smart, c1840.

The business of an earth stopper (the night before a days sport), was to stop up the foxes earth while he is out feeding.

The gentleman Swain in the painting was supposed to be on his way home, when at a sudden turn of the lane he is sees what he thinks to be the Devil.

In fact it is a simple sweep and his donkey.
